Afghan treasures in Ottawa
From the Globe & Mail, January 19, 2010. Written by Patrick Dineen
When Canadians think about Afghanistan, it's generally in connection with fighting the Taliban insurgency. But the country has a long and colourful history, and part of its cultural heritage is now on display in Canada’s capital. Four Points by Sheraton Gatineau-Ottawa is offering a package that combines accommodation with tickets to the exhibit Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization right across the street. The package includes two tickets to the museum, free parking at the hotel during your stay and breakfast for two, with rates from $149 per room, per night.
The exhibit, on display now through March 28, showcases more than 200 artifacts from the National Museum in Kabul –including gold jewellery, ivory, glassware and sculpture that’s as much as 2,300 years old.
